HIGH MILE - LEWIS KENNEDY

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, running has seen a surge in popularity, becoming a way for people to stay active, clear their minds, and connect with themselves. For some, it can be more than just exercise. I spoke to Lewis, a committed runner and the creator of High Mile, brand born from a passion for the positive impact running can have.

To start off a very simple but very important question! What inspired you to start running?

I was doing some basic running as part of boxing training in my mid to late 20s. Since coming away from boxing some years back I really missed the feeling of being fit and active so I started running again as it was the simplest and most effective way I could retain that feeling and maintain some discipline. It is also the best way I can stay consistent as it does not require nothing or no one else to do.

What’s the story behind the name High Mile?

I really wanted to express the feeling that I got from running. Running makes you feel great and I believe it can really have a huge effect on a person's life. The name has nothing to do with distance and 100% to do with the high vibe and mindset you are on during and post run. The feeling when out running on your own in your own headspace is incredible. There's nothing like it. Running is non specific to distance. Whether you run one mile or ten the great feeling it gives you after is the same. This is High Mile.

How has social media helped you grow your brand?

Social Media has been brilliant. I tend to focus mostly on Instagram as it is difficult to manage all platforms but it has just been pretty cool to be able to share positive content and experiences with running. I think if you have something good, something positive that can potentially benefit someone else then it should be shared, and it's great that we have Social Media platforms like Instagram to do so.

How do you juggle family, work life and High Mile? What advice would you give for people who want to do the same?

Honestly, it is not easy. Time is scarce for most of us. For me training is something I feel I need to do so I start every week looking for an opportunity to grab myself 45 mins to an hour, wherever possible. I do most of my runs before work or early mornings so it does not encroach on family time. If I am home, family and household duties are priority and when there is time I go and do my bit. I understand that I am not a professional athlete so I do not have to be super strict and as long as I am getting some work in each week. I am happy and I am grateful for that. It is not about high performance for me but just feeling that bit better so i can perform better on a day to day basis. A better Dad. A better partner and a better person in general.

Lastly, are there any exciting new High Mile projects we should be looking out for!

Yes, so I am hoping to spend the rest of this year putting myself out more, meeting up with more people and hearing different stories and perspectives on running. As someone that is committed to running I know that it can take a lot to get yourself up and drag yourself out for a run at 6 in the morning. I've always admired and appreciated people that do it and just think it would be cool to hear different peoples motives, reasons and what effect it may have had on their lives.
